Maine holds a special place in American art.

With its rocky coastlines, dramatic climate and unique quality of light, Maine has drawn artists for generations. Some of America’s finest have called it home, from Edward Hopper to Andrew Wyeth to Lynne Drexler. Many others have found inspiration here, including Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keefe and Lois Dodd.

Maine’s artistic legacy is deep and august. Monhegan Island has been an artist colony for over 100 years. New York City artists have long used Maine as a summertime retreat (it was a kind of annex for the New York School). And innumerable artist residencies like the esteemed Skowhegan School, established in 1946, continue to develop new talent.

Without professional stewardship, though, most art never transitions from the primary to the secondary market. It needs a bridge. Maine Art Legacies Trust (MALT) cares for the collections and reputations of some of Maine's finest artists—to ensure their continued impact and to help preserve the artistic heritage of the region.

MALT promotes the work of these artists through research, publication, museum outreach and exhibition, placement into private and public collections, and partnerships with domestic and international galleries. We protect, properly value and promote collections to keep them accessible to future generations. Our focus is Maine’s place in art, women artists and American modernism.

“To have a home for my photographs with Elizabeth Moss—a caring and smart curator—is a major accomplishment that pleases me very much.”
